How does he do it?

No idea. I tried clockwise (downwards on the strings) windmilling and seriously rapped my knuckles. I tried anticlockwise and found hitting the strings with the three fingers not holding the plec was much less painful, but still too easy to miss altogether.

Then a mate, Paul Lewis (ex-Marillion tour manager), suggested I try using my left hand pinkie; everyone’s so mesmerised by your right arm they’re not looking at your left hand. See this week’s video for full instructions. It’s easy but looks great; the essence of bluffing!
